Santons or little saints, symbolize the essence of Provence. Santon making is a completely different use of clay than that of master potters or tile manufacturers. Santons are molded in plaster then each one is delicately painted with oil based paint or dressed in Provencial fabrics. The early santons date back to Saint Francis of Assisi (1182 - 1226) whose mother was from Provence. These early figures were made of wood and later of cork, wax, and even wire. In the late 17th century ceramists began making santons out of clay.

The House of Fouque where santons have been made for over three generations created our "Coup De Mistral" in 1952. This special santon with its intricate molds depicting a moving character earned Paul Fouque, the creator, the title of "Meilleur Ouvrier de France" at the National Crafts exhibition.
